SRINAGAR: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq has expressed grief over the deaths of seven members of a family in Poonch following a landslide triggered by heavy rains, while questioning the prioritisation of basic drainage infrastructure under the Srinagar Smart City project.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz described the incident in Poonch as a “heartbreaking tragedy” and said the continuing loss of lives and devastation in Poonch and Rajouri were deeply distressing.
“Another heartbreaking tragedy in Poonch, where seven members of a family lost their lives after a landslide triggered by heavy rains. May Allah grant Jannat-ul-Firdous to them. The continuing loss of lives and devastation across Poonch and Rajouri is deeply distressing,” he said.
Commenting on waterlogging in Srinagar, Mirwaiz said the widespread flooding in the city raised questions about whether basic drainage infrastructure had been adequately prioritised under the Smart City project.
He said a city could not become “smart” through cosmetic overhauls alone, and stressed the need to focus on essential infrastructure to address recurring waterlogging.
