Violent clashes between youths and forces erupted in Old City after Friday prayers leaving 6 persons injured.

Eyewitnesses told Srinagar-based news agency GNS that dozens of youths assembled in Nowhatta after congregation prayers and staged anti-India and pro-freedom protests. The protesters raised slogans in favour of Islam and freedom.

Reports said that the youth later resorted to heavy stone-pelting on police and CRPF and engaged them in pitched battles. The youths also clashed with government forces at Saraf Kadal, Rajouri Kadal and Gojwara. The police fired scores of teargas shells towards the protesters and also used pepper gas.

The reports said that the clashes between the two sides continued for several hours during which 6 people were injured. The clashes affected the business activities in the parts of the Old City while as the vehicular traffic was also hit.

Reports reaching here this late evening, if believed, said that ruling PDP’s youth face, Waheed-ur-Rehman Para too offered his Friday prayers in historic Jamia Masjid led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
