A flood-like situation is looming large over Kargil as the rise in temperature led to abrupt melting of snow, which is likely to trigger flash floods. The situation has sounded alarm over the region.

To look into the matter and the growing concern of flash floods, acting CEC, Aga Syed Abass Razvi called a meeting of district officers and councillors, which was attended by Executive Councillor Syed Mujtaba, Deputy Commissioner Kargil Hassan Khan and other district officers.

During the meeting, acting CEC directed the officers concerned to start restoration works on war footing particularly of Irrigational Canals.

A team of officials led by Dy SP SDRF Kargil along with Councillor Shakar Zakir Hussain visited the famous Shashi Lake after news of sudden leakage, arising threat to the villagers of Sandoo, Sanjak, Kharboo, Lhalung etc.

The team assured the people for immediate solution for stopping the leakage for which the councillor announced that from tomorrow two JCBs and Trippers will be engaged.

Fresh flash floods in Hunderman Brok and Maal, Lankarchey Brok and Thang and Ichu-Shargandik, Kochik, Thulus and Pursa occurred due to which, irrigational canals, lands, livestock, Pashmina Goat, roads and trees and in Shargandik, the CAPD Store has been washed away. People of border district Kargil are facing problems due to flashfloods from the last one month.

People demanded immediate restoration of the damaged irrigational canals, need of construction of protection walls along waterways, compensation for trees and crops as well as live stocks.

Councillor Zakir Hussain said that if the leakage is not stopped on time, there is apprehension of huge damage from the Lake, on the patterns of Phuktal and added that people need not to panic but should be alert as precaution.

In Kargil, the main department concerned with the rural areas and rural people the Rural Development Department is without Project Director DRDA and Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) from the last 1.5 months and from the last 5 months the department is without Project Officer Self employment and Haryali.

Due to the non-presence of these officials, people of the rural areas are suffering a lot, particularly in these days of disasters.

The people have requested the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to kindly intervene in this matters so that their suffering can be lessened.
