President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday awarded India’s highest peacetime military decoration Ashok Chakra posthumously to IAF Garud commando Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala, who was killed during an encounter with militants in Jammu and Kashmir, reports claimed.

The award was received by Corporal Nirala’s wife Sushmanand and his mother Malti Devi at the majestic Rajpath. After presenting the award, Kovind was seen wiping his face and eyes with his handkerchief, The Indian Express reported.

On November 18 last year, government forces had launched a cordon and search operation in Chanderger village of Bandipora district which later turned into a gun battle resulting in the death of IAF Garud commando Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala and six militants.
