SRINAGAR: President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of L Murugan from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect, following his decision to return to Tamil Nadu to strengthen the BJP in the state.
Murugan, who held the portfolios of Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.
According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique issued on Wednesday, the President accepted the resignation on the Prime Minister’s advice under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
Murugan’s resignation is the third departure of a Minister of State from the Union Council of Ministers following George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu, who resigned in June and July, respectively, after the BJP did not renominate them for Rajya Sabha elections.
A Rajya Sabha member since September 2021, Murugan was re-elected to the Upper House from Madhya Pradesh in April 2024. His current term is scheduled to end in April 2030.
