‘J&K Handicapped Association’ staged a protest demanding an increase in the monthly pension from 400 to Rs 3000 and a vertical reservation in the government jobs.

According to the association there are 4.5 lakh handicapped persons in Jammu and Kashmir and due to state government’s apathy a large number of families are suffering every sort of trouble.

“Due to the turmoil which killed thousands of people during the last two decades left a large number of people disabled but government is doing every possible effort to rehabilitate them,” an official in the state social welfare department said adding that the increase in the monthly pension to the extent it is demanded is not possible.

Dozens of Specially Able persons gathered in Lalchowk on Monday holding banners and placards. The protesters put forth a huge list of demands which ends at the demand of seeking information of number of posts filled since 1998.

The other demands include loans at a low interest rate, similar facilities as given to SC and ST, 50 percent concession in electric fee charges, free medical aid and to establish handicapped advisory board in the state.

‘J&K Handicapped Association’ alleges that the state government is showing an indifferent attitude towards those handicapped in the last two decades of turmoil and is trying to exploit them.

Hundreds  of  school children also marched on the Srinagar roads to show solidarity with the ‘ Special children’.

‘World Disabled Day’ is observed every year on 3 December. Also known as “International Day of Persons with Disabilities”, the day aims to promote an awareness of disability issues and the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities.
