Protesters Friday ransacked a police post at Gajansoo village in Jammu district and damaged vehicles while protesting against the death of a youth who was released by local police Thursday in connection with a case of alleged transportation of illicit liquor, tribuneindia reported.

Infuriated over the death, the people first blocked the road and later ransacked the police post to vent their anger. The protestors also damaged a police vehicle and three bikes parked inside the police post. The situation remained tense in the area throughout the day, the report said.

The protesters, the report added, said the deceased, identified as Rinku Kumar, 25, son of Shamsher Singh, a resident of Gajansoo, was allegedly picked up by the police for carrying illicit liquor on Wednesday and released on bail yesterday.

“The condition of the youth started deteriorating at his home and he was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital by his family members last evening. The youth died at the hospital this morning,” the protesters said, adding that he was allegedly tortured in the custody.

When contacted, Sunil Gupta, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, said they had ordered an inquiry into the incident and the SSP (Rural) had been asked to complete the probe at the earliest.

“The youth was released on bail yesterday. What I have learnt is that his condition deteriorated at his home last evening and he was admitted to the hospital by his family members, where he died. We will look into the allegations of the family members. A probe has been ordered and it will be completed in the shortest possible time,” the SSP said. Later, a three-member medical board conducted the autopsy of the body.
