Two militants were killed in an overnight encounter at Chinigam in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district Friday morning.

Local sources said that at least four houses have been razed to ground after forces blew them up by planting IEDs.

Forces had postponed their operation Thursday evening and when it was resumed today morning the two holed up militants were killed.

Forces had launched a cordon and search operation in the village last evening following information about presence of militants in the area, sources said.

Forces party was fired upon by the militants, which was retaliated, triggering off a fierce gun battle.

Arms and ammunition have been recovered from the site of the encounter along with the bodies of the slain militants, they said, adding the identity of the slain militants is being ascertained.

Police also confirmed the killing of two militants. “1 RR and 18 Bn CRPF had launched a cordon and search operation, last evening in the village,” police said.

Meanwhile, people have taken to streets in Chenigam and adjoining villages, including Frisal to protest against the forces. The protesters were raising anti-India and pr-freedom slogans. The protests were going on when the reports last came in.
