Intense clashes erupted in Islamic University of Science and Technology in Awantipora on Wednesday after students of the varsity started protesting against the detention of their colleague Junaid Ahmad Aakhoon.
Junaid was arrested by Police on Sunday from his home in Aragam village of Awantipora.
Reports said that scores of students held a massive protest demonstration in the University campus against the arrest of the student.
The students marched on the main road and tried to block the traffic movement. However, police swung into action and tried to disperse the students.
The students later pelted stones on the Police outside the campus of the varsity. Police retaliated by firing teargas shells. A student of the varsity informed that Police fired teargas shells inside the campus.
Akhoon was detained for questioning about his brother Salia Mohammad Akhoon, an active militant who was involved in recent bank robbery incident at Marhama Bijbehara, according to police. He is a student of Polytechnic college at IUST.
A police official said that Junaid is under detention as they are investigating the case.
