Police on Wednesday evening issued following statement regarding the killing of militant in Pulwama saying that today in the evening hours, a joint patrolling party was fired upon by militants at Chakoora area of District Pulwama.

“The fire was retaliated leading to a brief gunfight. Consequently, one militant got killed in the exchange of fire,” said police spokesman in a statement.

“The slain militant has been identified as Irfan Ahmed Sheikh son of Gulzar Ahmad Sheikh resident of Chakoora, Pulwama,” said the spokesman.

The spokesman said he was affiliated with proscribed militant outfit LeT and was known as District Commander of LeT for Pulwama. He was wanted by the law for his complicity in terror crimes.

“Irfan had a long history of terror crime records for which several terror cases were registered against him. He was involved in conspiring and executing several attacks on security establishments in the area including grenade attacks,” he said.

“Arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of the gunfight. All these materials have been taken in case of records for further investigation and probe their complicity in other terror cases,” he added.

“Citizens are once again requested not to venture inside the encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” said police spokesman in a statement.
