Umat-e-Islami chairperson and South Kashmir Mirwaiz, Qazi Yasir was arrested by police on Thursday during a press conference at his residence in Qazi Mohalla Islamabad.

Yasir, while addressing media denounced the coming elections in Islamabad assembly as “puppet elections”.

“We must unite and boycott this election which only disfigures our struggle for Azaadi,” he said.

By-Polls of Islamabad elections are being held on June 22. The assembly seat fell vacant due to demise of former CM Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Sayeed breated his last on January 07, 2016 in AIIMS, New Delhi.

CM Ms Mehbooba Mufti, NC’s businessman Iftikhar Misger and Congress’ Hilal Ahmad Shah re among seven candidates fighting elections.

The elections were deferred two times earlier. First, J&K government cited law and order problems when ECI had notified elections for May 15. The elections were scheduled for June 19 then which were again deferred “because death anniversary of Qazi Nisar falls on this date”.

He also condemned the recent alleged harassment of the families of two militants in Qaimoh area of Kulgam.

While he addressing media, police arrived at the scene and he stopped, cut short and arrested.

Angry with his arrest, Qazi’s supporters raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
