SRINAGAR: The Government of Jammu & Kashmir has established a toll-free helpline to support students from the Union Territory studying in other parts of India, following reports of harassment and threats in the wake of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam.
The helpline, 1800-8900-166, has been launched at the Raabita Office in Srinagar and will operate round-the-clock. It is designed to provide immediate assistance to students facing intimidation and will coordinate with local authorities when needed.
The initiative follows widespread concern over the safety of Kashmiri students amid rising instances of discrimination and hostility reported from various parts of the country. The government has called the move a “swift and decisive” measure to safeguard students from the Union Territory.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep concern over the reported incidents and reiterated the government’s firm commitment to the dignity and safety of every student from Jammu & Kashmir.
In a resolution passed during an All Party Meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, the J&K Government appealed to all State and Union Territory administrations to protect Kashmiri students and residents from harassment and intimidation.
“We humbly and earnestly appeal to the governments of all States and Union Territories to come forward with unwavering commitment to protect the Kashmiri students and citizens who find themselves far from home,” the resolution stated.
The government also urged all educational institutions and local administrations across the country to maintain communal harmony and take strict action against any individuals or groups inciting unrest.
Families and students are encouraged to report any instances of harassment or threats through the toll-free number. The government has assured swift response and necessary intervention in all genuine cases.
