The Kashmir train which was on a test run from Baramullah to Banihal on Thursday was stopped by locals in Khilad Shahabad, a village in district Islamabad.

The locals were protesting and demanding that they should get a railway station in Khilad, which is on the Kashmir side of the tunnel. The locals claim, “By getting a station our economical problems will get solved.”

The key Qazigund-Banihal section which comprises of the longest transportation tunnel, 11.2 km long under the Pir Panjal mountain range, took seven-year to get complete. Its estimated cost is Rs 1300 crores.

The tunnel has been constructed by New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), used for the first time on such large scale in India.
