Railway Plans Two Warm Trains For Kashmir’s Cold Track

SRINAGAR: Indian Railways is set to enhance its connectivity to Kashmir with the expected launch of two new trains next month. One of the key additions will be a centrally heated sleeper train, which will operate between New Delhi and Srinagar. Unlike previous speculations of a Vande Bharat, this train will feature comfortable sleeper accommodations but will not include second-class sleeper compartments. The 13-hour journey will offer scenic views of snow-capped mountains and cross the iconic 359-m-high Chenab Bridge, providing passengers with an elevated travel experience.

The second new service will be an eight-coach Vande Bharat train designed for the shorter Katra-Baramulla route. This train will feature chair car seating and is equipped with advanced amenities tailored for the region’s challenging conditions. Among its innovations are silicon heating pads for water tanks to prevent freezing and toilets with warm air, made possible by specially designed ducts. In a first for Indian Railways, the front glass for the loco pilots will be embedded with heating elements to prevent it from freezing in sub-zero temperatures.

This Vande Bharat service is expected to dramatically reduce travel time on the 246-km Katra-Baramulla route, completing the journey in just three-and-a-half hours, a significant improvement over the 10-hour bus ride. These new trains are expected to offer both comfort and efficiency, marking a major step forward in improving transportation links to the region.
