The People Democratic Party (PDP) suffered another setback on Thursday as its senior leader from Uri constituency Raja Aijaz Ali Khan has resigned from the party.

“I have resigned from the PDP and have sent my resignation to the Party president,” Raja Aijaz told Kashmir Life over the phone.

Raja Aijaz alleged the PDP had drifted off the path and had become a hub of insensitive people.

The former police officer, who retired as IGP, had joined PDP as part of his post-retirement engagement. He contested polls on PDP mandate from Uri in 2014 and ended up runner-up with almost 19,000 votes. In recent days, Raja was representing the party on crucial issues on various TV debates within the state. However, his resignation indicates that the tectonic shifts are still taking place in the PDP that is sulking after the collapse of the ill-fated BJPDP alliance.

The trickle of resignations from the PDP started with the resignation of former lawmakers Imran Raza Ansari, Abid Ansari, Mohammad Abbas Wani, and more recently by Dr Haseeb A Drabu. While Ansaris’ and Wani are expected to support the Peoples Conference, Drabu is keeping his cards close to his chest.
