SRINAGAR: The Rajouri district administration has begun shifting the office of the Deputy Commissioner to an alternate location after the existing building was declared unsafe due to structural damage caused by continuous heavy rainfall and recent flash floods.
Officials said the building had developed minor cracks earlier, but the recent spell of intense rain and flash floods significantly worsened its condition, prompting an immediate technical inspection.
A team from the Public Works (R and B) Department inspected the structure and, following a detailed assessment, declared it unsafe for occupation.
According to the Superintendent Engineer, the adverse impact of heavy rainfall and flash floods had compromised the structural stability of the building, resulting in the widening of existing cracks. The inspection concluded that the premises were no longer fit for regular use.
Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma said the safety of government employees and members of the public remained the administration’s top priority. He said the process of relocating staff and transferring official records, particularly those stored on the ground floor, had already begun, and an alternate building had been identified to house the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Sharma said he was continuing to operate from the existing office to oversee the relocation and ensure the safe movement of records, equipment and other essential documents. He added that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had been directed to provide temporary structural support to the building to facilitate the safe and orderly shifting process.
The district administration assured the public that government services and official work would continue without disruption during the transition and said necessary arrangements were being made to ensure the smooth functioning of the Deputy Commissioner’s office from the new premises.
