SRINAGAR: Aijaz Dar, a resident of the Thanamandi area of Rajouri district, was Tuesday night killed by ‘miscreants’ near the Murad Pur area of the district when he was returning home after buying a buffalo.

Dar, who was injured in the attack, succumbed to his injuries at Government Medical College Jammu while two others accompanying him escaped without any major injury.

As per locals in the area, the attack was carried by cow ‘vigilantes’ who have been active in the area for a long time now. However, the police didn’t confirm the allegations,

Dar, the sole brother to his three sisters was the only bread earner in the family. He is survived by a paralyzed father.

His family could not be reached for comments despite multiple attempts.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rajouri’s office said an FIR no 408 under relevant sections of law has been booked while the people identified for the attack are absconding.

“The investigations are going on but the motive is not yet known,” the SSP office said.

Guftar Ahmad, a tribal activist from Rajouri said that after protests, police registered an FIR under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. He demanded the death penalty for the accused. He had also earlier tweeted, “Murder of Aijaz Dar should get death penalty. Only bread earner of a poor family killed by goons last night in Rajouri J & K. How many families will become victims of lynching? @JmuKmrPolice his murderer should get death penalty.”
