Provincial President National Conference, Jammu, Devender Singh Rana Saturday emphasized the significant role of opinion makers in building a harmonious society by preserving and strengthening its time-tested characteristics of amity, tranquillity and brotherhood.

“Together with clean environment and serene ambience, it is important to create conditions congenial for human living in an aura of love and compassion”, Rana said while launching cleanliness drive under Swatch Bharat Abhiyan with Jammu Municipal Corporation in Ward No 71 of Sidhra, which forms part of Nagrota assembly constituency.

The Provincial President lauded the role of civil society and men of letters in their respective fields for their role in acting as the guardians of the “Idea of India”, saying this reflects the societal urge to make this world a better place to live in. “Such an idealistic set up is difficult to be created and sustained if hate and myopic tendencies take over the great values and spirit of tolerance.”

“The proponents of trifurcation of the state are the enemies of the state, its people and the country. They need to be identified and isolated because trifurcation will sow the seeds of mistrust, hatred and disillusionment which will lead to a disenchantment which could lead to a direct challenge to the very idea of a Great Country India,” he said.

He exhorted the participants to work together to eliminate the menace of intolerance and help in creating an ecosystem for every individual’s free growth thereby challenging the elements inimical to tranquillity.

“We have to work towards creating a society which will become enviable abode for citizenry in terms of their vision and spirit of camaraderie”, he maintained.

Addressing the gathering, Rana said, “You are the repository of knowledge and experience and I need your blessings and guidance to take forward my mission of development of Nagrota constituency.”

He enumerated certain historic developmental initiatives taken in the past eight months since he has been elected as the MLA with non-governmental developmental interventions outside the scope of the state government.

On the cleanliness mission, the MLA observed that urban pockets needed it the most as these are alarmingly turning into slums. He referred to mountains of garbage accumulating in every neighbourhood with each passing day and said though the government cannot absolve itself of its responsibility in maintaining high civic standards, the society has a duty to keep the cities and towns clean.

Rana called for the continuity of the mission, saying it should not end up as a ritual. “Let’s pledge to make clean environment our commitment towards the society”, he added.

Later MLA Nagrota kick started the macadamization programme in Nagrota constituency as also repair work on rural roads. (KNS)
