SRINAGAR

Independent lawmaker Engineer Rasheed was Monday morning arrested at Jahangir Chowk along with 48 followers when he was heading towards civil secretariat to stop the chief minister Omar Abdullah from entering the secretariat on the very first day of durbar in summer capital. Rasheed was protesting against the infamous spurious drug scandal and he was demanding the ouster of former health minister Sham Lal Sharma.

Rasheed appeared in the Jahangir Chowk along with his supporters and started shouting slogans against the spurious drug scandal and the government. The already deployed large contingent of police swung into action and stopped the protesters from moving forward. When they resisted, police arrested Rasheed and his 48 followers and foiled the march. During the scuffle two protesters Farooq Ahmad Lone of Wadipora and Zahoor Ahmad of Sangrama were injured. Farooq was later hospitalized. 1Rasheed has been detained in the district police lines while as other protesters were taken to police station Shaheed Gunj.

Rasheed had last week announced that he will not allow chief minister Omar Abdullah and his colleagues to enter the secretariat premises on the eve of the opening of civil secretariat in summer capital Srinagar, against the “failure of Chief Minister” to act fast against those accused and involved in notorious drug scam.
