A delegation of Hurriyat (m) Tuesday turned up in Srinagar’s Press Enclave to protest over the mass rape of Kunan that happened this day, 25 years ago.

The protesters led by the Adv Shahid-ul-Islam followed by Hilal Ah War and Javaid Ah Mir demanded action against the perpetrators of 1991 ‘mass- gang rape’ in Kunan Poshpora by an army regiment.

“The victims haven’t yet received justice as the culprits are still roaming free,” said Hilal Ahmad War. “The perpetrators of the crime were supposed to be booked as the testimonies of the survivors and their families were enough an eye-opener for the international community and Rights Bodies to act.”

“More than 100 women were reportedly gang-raped during a cordon and search operation by 4 Rajputana Rifles of 68th brigade of the Indian Army and out of them, only 52 reported FIR against the culprits but none of them have been punished yet.”

On February 25/26, 1991, villagers sent letter to DC Kupwara and police authorities regarding the rape and torture. It was then the Trehgam Police Station registered FIR under section 376, 452 and 342 RPC.

“When a girl from Delhi is raped, the whole nation comes on roads seeking punishment for the culprits,” War said, “but when a 70-year-old Kashmiri woman along with her two daughters-in-laws, including a 13-year-old girl, is being raped under one roof, the meaning of justice changes.”
