Lamenting over the pro-longed detention of pro-freedom leaders and activists who have been sentenced to life imprisonment, Dukhtaran-e-Milat on Thursday said that the Joint resistance leadership has don ‘very little’ in providing legal aid to them.

Coming down heavily, DeM Secretary General, Nahida Nasreen, in a press statement said, “While Shaheed Afzal Guru and Shaheed Maqbool Bhat were given death sentences, the lifer detainees are being forced to die again and again.”

She said that the life sentence till death is much harsher than the death sentence itself.

She appealed the resistance leaders, lawyers, and civil society to come forward and help those serving life imprisonments.

“The lifer detainees have been left at the mercy of Allah. India and its ‘puppets’ are forcing them to rot in jails while the resistance leadership has not done anything substantial for them,” the statement further reads.

She said all the lifer detainees need legal help and we as a society are duty bound to help them in whatever ways we can, collectively or individually.

She also appealed the joint resistance leadership to take serious note of the situation and also engage the Bar association to provide legal aid to political prisoners lingering in jails.

She said while lifers in Indian states are freed after completing the sentence of 14 years, however, for Kashmiris, it is not the case.

“The puppet regime uses all its machinery to ensure that those whose will they are unable to break are kept behind bars for their entire lives,” she said.
