SRINAGAR: Restoration work is in full swing after a landslide blocked the Srinagar–Baramulla National Highway near the Eco Park area of Baramulla, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters.
Officials said a sudden slide brought down a large volume of debris onto the highway, leading to a complete halt of vehicular movement on the busy stretch.
The incident triggered panic among locals and travellers at the time, although no casualties or injuries were reported.
Soon after the landslide, the concerned departments pressed machinery and manpower into service to clear the debris and restore connectivity. Road clearance teams were seen working continuously to remove mud, stones and fallen material from the carriageway, while traffic police diverted vehicles to prevent further congestion.
The Srinagar–Baramulla National Highway is a vital arterial road connecting north Kashmir with the summer capital, and any disruption on the route has a direct impact on daily commuters, transporters and the supply chain.
Locals expressed hope that the ongoing highway widening and upgradation project would also focus on slope stabilisation and the development of alternative routes to reduce the risk of repeated blockades in the future. They said long-term preventive measures are essential to ensure safety and uninterrupted movement.
Authorities stated that traffic will be restored as soon as the clearance operation is completed and safety assessments are carried out. Monitoring of vulnerable stretches along the highway has also been intensified to avoid similar incidents. [KNT]
