The government will impose restrictions in old city on Thursday in view of a rally being organized by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on the martyrdom anniversaries of Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.

The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar told KNS that in the areas of the old city coming under the jurisdiction of six police stations, section 144 will be imposed and no procession shall be allowed to take place in these areas. He added that in view of the law and order situation, such a decision has been taken.

Meanwhile, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that he had intimated the government earlier over holding a rally at Martyrs graveyard Eidgah, Srinagar in view of the martyr day- observed every year in Kashmir on May 21.  Mirwaiz also castigated the state authorities over imposing restrictions on his movement and placing him under house arrest.

Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Moulvi Farooq was killed on May 21, 1990 by the unknown persons at his Nigeen residence while as Abdul Gani lone met the similar fate in the year 2002 at Martyrs graveyard Srinagar.

Hurriyat groups every year call for a shutdown on May 21 to remember the slain leaders.
