Expressing serious concern over the hurdles being created to stop people from extending solidarity with the family of Muhammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged on February 9, senior political leader and MLA Sangrama, Syed Basharat Bukhari said that a huge tragedy has befallen the family with this hanging, “now that the family needs consolation and people are not even allowed to visit them and show solidarity.”

“Even the family members were not allowed to have his last glimpse which is completely unheard of in a humane world and that too in the largest democracy,” said Bukhari adding that it has hurt all and its impact will have a longer impact on their psyche.

Bukhari said that even to put restriction on the movement of mourners is a shameful act.

“All roads leading to their Mazbugh village are closed and only way is to cross the river Jhelum which is not possible,” he said while asking the government to explain its position as to why the area has been garrisoned and people are not allowed to move freely.

“People have shown an exemplary behaviour by remaining peaceful even when the wound is so deep. This should be respected and reciprocated by facilitating the people’s movement”. He termed this approach as callous and demanded that the restrictions should be lifted forthwith. He also demanded that Afzal’s body should be returned to the family and they be allowed to have its
decent burial.
