On Thursday, an engineer from Srinagar’s Nowshera locality bought a Pizza from a bakery shop in Baghi Ali Mardan Khan, hardly knowing that the Pizza would soon hospitalise his kids.

Bilal Ahmad, the engineer, bought the fungus-laden Pizza from New Mughal Darbar bakery shop—an independent bakery shop, having no affiliation with Srinagar’s prominent bakery shop, Mughal Darbar.

“Barely minutes after consuming the Pizza, one of his kids complained about stomach-ache and another started vomiting,” said Sanam Tasaduq, Kashmir correspondent of Aalami Samay News. “Both kids were rushed to SKIMS Medical Institute Soura, where doctor treating them said consumption of rotten Pizza has caused food poisoning in them.”

While checking Pizza, Bilal, the father, found a layer of fungus on its base. “The moment Bilal went to seek explanation from the bakery shop about the rotten Pizza, they grabbed it forcibly in an attempt to bury the evidence. But the father could savour a part of Pizza and ran away,” he said.

Later, said Sanam, the proprietor of the bakery shop tendered apology for feeding fungal Pizza to the engineer’s kids, who had a brush with near fatality.

Notably, the latest case is another instance where bakery shops or food outlets hogged headlines for serving cockroach-rich delicacies.
