SRINAGAR: The Jammu Division of Northern Railway recovered nearly Rs 78 lakh in penalties during a month-long ticket-checking drive in July, detecting more than 10,000 cases of ticketless and irregular travel, officials said on Sunday.
According to railway officials, the special enforcement campaign was launched across the division to curb ticketless travel, unauthorised travel in higher classes, carriage of unbooked luggage, and other violations of railway regulations.
The inspections were carried out by ticket-checking staff through surprise and routine checks on mail, express and passenger trains, besides major railway stations across the Jammu Division. The drive was conducted under the supervision of Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal.
During the month-long operation, railway authorities detected 10,014 cases of ticketless and irregular travel. Penalties imposed under the Railway Act generated Rs 77,97,430 in revenue.

Singhal commended the ticket-checking staff for the successful campaign, saying the initiative was aimed not only at improving revenue collection but also at encouraging passengers to follow railway rules and travel with valid tickets.
He said the Jammu Division would continue to organise intensive ticket-checking drives to discourage fare evasion, ensure passenger discipline and safeguard railway property.
