SRINAGAR: Russia has resumed strikes on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, three days after US peace negotiators left the region, with ballistic missile and drone attacks killing two people, according to AFP.
The renewed strikes followed the expiry of a three-day pause ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin while US President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, visited Moscow and Kyiv over the weekend.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine said on Telegram that Russian forces had also targeted the Boryspil and Fastiv districts with drones.
Kyiv’s city military administration said an air raid alert was issued in the capital over the threat of a drone attack and urged residents to seek shelter.
Russia’s state-run news agency TASS earlier confirmed that the temporary suspension of strikes had expired.
The attacks came as Witkoff indicated that progress had been made in discussions involving Ukraine and Russia, raising the possibility of reviving three-way peace negotiations aimed at ending the conflict.
The latest strikes underscore the fragile nature of diplomatic efforts despite renewed contacts between the parties and US representatives.
