SRINAGAR: Safeena Beigh, wife of former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Beigh has won from Wagoora territorial constituency. She was contesting independently.

Safeena Beigh Defeats PAGD, Apni Party

Ms Beigh defeated the People’s alliance for Gupkar declaration (PAGD) candidate, and Nasreena Firdous, the mother of JKAP leader Shoaib Nabi Lone and wife of assassinated PDP education minister Ghulam Nabi in a triangular contest.

Safeena was earlier denied mandate by PAGD following which Muzaffar Beigh resigned from the PDP as its patron. The ticket was given to NC which led her to contest as an independent candidate from Wagoora.

A trained lawyer and a mother of two, Ms Beigh had been taking interest in the party politics for a long time formally. This led the party to appoint her as the leader of the women’s’ wing. At one point in time, in recent days, she was being seen more in PDP than her husband. However, after the AGD seat sharing, Beig took an exception over the, what he said, the lopsided sharing, and quite the party.

Beig nephew, Javaid Hussain Beig, who was a lawmaker from Baramulla had already resigned the PDP and joined JK Apni Party. Beig was one of the founders of the PDP.
