SRINAGAR: A controversy has erupted after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s office posted on X, formerly Twitter, that Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather had called on him to discuss the upcoming budget session.
In a post on X, Peoples Conference leader Sajad Lone criticised the meeting, calling it an “insult to the sanctity of the legislature” and a “disgrace” to the post of Speaker.
Lone questioned why the Speaker, the highest authority in the legislature, needed to meet with the Chief Minister.
He further mocked the Speaker, accusing him of “sitting like a good boy” in front of the Chief Minister. Lone shared an anecdote highlighting the independence of the Speaker’s position in a democracy. According to an excerpt from a book shared by Lone, when the first Speaker of the Lok Sabha sought a meeting with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Nehru rushed to the Speaker’s office instead of expecting the Speaker to visit him.
