SRINAGAR: A Sarpanch (village head) was killed while two others suffered injuries in a road accident at Nagri in Hatmulla area of this north Kashmir district on Thursday evening.

A police official told news agency GNS that a collision took place between a Tata Sumo (JK05F-0630) and a Santro (JK09-4898) at Shartwari crossing area of the district, resulting in injuries to three persons.

The official identified the injured persons as Mohammad Iqbal Waza son of Nazir Ahmad (Santro driver), Mohammad Sarwar Ganie,  his wife, Mahtaba Begum boarding the Santro. All the injured hail from Nagri Hatmulla area, the official said.

The injured were evacuated to District Hospital Handwara for treatment. However, Mohammed Sarwar Ganaie (52), who also happens to be the village head, succumbed to injuries on way to the hospital, the official said.

A case has been registered in this regard and further investigations under relevant sections of the law taken up, the official added.
