SRINAGAR: A Sarpanch was shot dead by militants in north Kashmir. Police confirmed the killing.

The slain Sarpanch was identified as Manzoor Ahmad Bangroo from Goshbugh area of Pattan, Baramulla. The area was cordoned off and searches started. The outcome of the operation was not known.

Police said the incident took place at 7:35 pm.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that terrorists had fired upon Manzoor Ahmad Bangroo (an independent Sarpanch) son of Mohammad Sideeq Bangroo resident of Goshbugh, at Goshbugh Pattan area of Baramulla,” the police spokesman in Srinagar said. “In this terror crime incident, he had received critical gunshot injuries and was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries however, doctors declared him dead on arrival.”

Police said they have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. The investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime. The area has been cordoned and searches in the area are going on.

The killing was condemned by the political parties and LG Manoj Sinha.

“JKNC condemns the gruesome killing of BJP Sarpanch Manzoor Ahmad in North Kashmir’s Goshbugh, Pattan in the strongest possible terms. The vicious cycle of violence seems to be unending. May Allah grant him a place in Jannat-ul-Firdous. Condolences to his family and loved ones,” JKNC said.

“Another targeted killing, another family in mourning this evening. This unending cycle of violence is heartbreaking. My condolences to the family of Manzoor Bangroo. May he find place in Jannat,” former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted.

“I strongly condemn the terror attack on sarpanch Manzoor Ahmad Bangroo. Perpetrators of this despicable act shall be punished. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family in this hour of grief,” said J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.

This despicable act of killing a public representative is a sheer act of cowardice. Words will never be enough to condemn. Sympathies with the bereaved family,” Apni Party founder Altaf Bukhari tweeted.

Bangroo’s killing is the fourth killing of a Sarpanch since March 2. Two sarpanches were killed in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district and one on the outskirts of Srinagar in March.
