On the eve of Eid-ul-Adha, the president of India on Tuesday appointed Satya Pal Malik as the new Governor of Jammu & Kashmir. Malik, who was serving as Governor of Bihar, will replace NN Vohra as J&K’s 13th Governor. Vohra was one of the longest serving Governors of J&K, whose tenure began in June 2008.

Malik, 71, a former MP and BJP’s national vice-president, has served as the Union Minister of State, Parliamentary Affairs, and Tourism and has held many important positions in Central and state governments. He was also a Rajya Sabha MP for two terms and a Lok Sabha MP from 1989 to 1990. Malik was also a Member of Uttar Pradesh Assembly from 1974 to 1977. He has also been the Chairman and member of many Parliamentary Committees.
