SRINAGAR

Police have arrested a renowned scholar and noted writer, Dr Ghulam Qadir Lone of Hudipora, Rafiabad in North Kashmir’s Baramullah district.

Dr Lone, who is PhD in Islamic Studies from Aligarh Muslim University, has been detained in Police station Dangiwacha.

Sources said that the said police station called Dr Lone yesterday and later detained him.

According to a Jama’at-e-Islami statement, Dr Lone has many international publications to his credit and is engaged in spreading the message of Islam.

“But, the people at the helm of affairs in the state have begun to see his social and religious activities with aversion. The state is trying to bar him from continuing his peaceful social and religious activities and without any regard for his erudition has been ill treatment in the Police station,” the statement said.

Jama’at further said that the way police have launched a widespread arrest spree across the state indicates that the future of our youth is being spoiled.

Jama’at-e-Islami has condemned the arrest of Dr Lone by calling it unjust and has demanded his immediate and unconditional release.
