SRINAGAR: The Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) has directed the immediate removal of vehicles parked illegally in green areas, open meadows and other ecologically sensitive locations across the tourist destination, citing the need to protect its fragile environment and natural landscape.
In an order issued on October 30, 2026, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the SDA directed the Traffic Police to ensure that vehicles parked at prohibited and non-designated locations are removed without delay.
The order identifies areas around Hotel Mount View, Hotel Akbar, Hotel Namrose, Thajiwas Gate and Gadkol, besides stretches along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, where parking has not been officially authorised.
It directs that vehicles found at such locations be shifted to the designated Old Truck Yard and Shutkadi parking areas in accordance with applicable traffic regulations.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Traffic, Ganderbal, has been asked to ensure strict implementation of the directions and deploy adequate personnel at the identified locations.
The Station House Officer (SHO), Police Station Sonamarg, has also been directed to provide the required police personnel and assistance to facilitate the removal drive and prevent any obstruction to enforcement.
The order, issued in continuation of the SDA’s earlier communication No. CEO/SDA/2026/516-22 dated May 16, 2026, makes it clear that green areas, natural meadows, roadside green belts and ecologically fragile spaces cannot be used for unauthorised parking.
The Authority has directed that the instructions be implemented forthwith, with sustained vigilance to prevent illegal parking from recurring.
