Strongly condemning the detention of Prof SAR Geelani, and JNU students union president, Kanhaiya Kumar, Hurriyat Patriarch Syed Ali Geelani Tuesday said that the detention of SAR Geelani and Kanhaiya Kumar has no constitutional and legal justification and it is an act of “muzzling” the freedom of expression.

Demanding immediate release of Syed Abdul Rehman Geelani and the JNU student, Geelani said that the secular and democratic claims of India are “badly getting exposed day by day and it is on its way to become an extremely intolerant Hindu Rashtra”.

In a statement issued from New Delhi, Geelani said, “despite being a great scholar, SAR Geelani is also a prominent human rights activist who works to highlight the excesses and atrocities in Jammu & Kashmir.”

Geelani said that SAR Geelani was arrested for speaking “in favour of Kashmir”. “He was detained in the recent past also and was also labelled with serious charges but the court later termed him innocent and he was released after spending a long time in jail.”

Hurriyat Conference (g) chairperson said that this time the arrest and registration of cases against Prof SAR Geelani is a “vengeance policy and the communal government of India wants to punish him for being a Kashmiri.” “He has done nothing for which he should be punished. He just organized an academic type of seminar which in every way was a peaceful and disciplined program.”

Geelani appealed human rights organizations to take serious notice of the “illegal detention” of Abdul Rehman Geelani and the JNU student’s union president and use their influence for their immediate release.

Meanwhile Hurriyat (g) condemned the beating of a student and pushing him down from the building in Islamabad by CRPF.

Geelani demanded stern punishment to the accused forces personnel. “The Indian occupational forces are in every possible ways trying to harm and punish the Kashmiris and the youths are their first target. These actions are the part of a well thought out plan and it is a worst form of state terrorism.”

Geelani also condemned in strong words the continuous house detention of Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Ayaz Akbar and Mohammad Ashraf Laya and demanded their immediate release.
