Since 2010, seven cops have joined militant ranks in Jammu and Kashmir, the government said Tuesday. While three of them have been killed in encounters, three have been detained and one is still at large.

In 2010, head constable Mohidin Ganie of Malwan Kulgma deserted police to join the militant outfit. He is still at large.

Two years later, in 2012, police arrested Abdul Rashid Shagan of Luchmanpora Batamaloo. He was involved in number of cases and has been lodged in Srinagar’s Central Jail.

One cop Mohammad Shafi Dar of Nowpora Kallan turned militant in 2014. He was later arrested, detained under PSA and subsequently released.

Last year, three cops turned militants: Pulwama’s Naeer Pandith and Doda’s Gul Mohammad Mangnoo and Riyaz Ahmad. The trio were killed in two different encounters.

In 2016, a cop Shakoor Ahmad from Bijbehara deserted police and joined militancy. He was later arrested and lodged in Kuthua Jail.

Nine other high-profile FIRs have been filed against police’s rank and file involving in different crimes and violations. The prominent among them is Hans Raj Parihar, ex-SSP Ganderbal, Bahadur Ram, ex-Dy.SP involved in Ganderbal fake encounter case.
