At least seven persons including a businessman from Kashmir were detained in a Jammu police station throughout the night for allegedly smuggling beef from Valley to Jammu city.

“We were seven in number when police raided our house in Sidhra. We were taken to Sidhra Police Post wherefrom we were shifted to Police Station Nagrota. We were accused of smuggling beef from Kashmir Valley to Jammu region,” one of the arrested youth said.

A police official said that they had received the inputs that a group of beef smugglers are present in Sidhra area. The house that was raided belonged to a Kashmiri. “Seven persons were detained for questioning,” the police official said and identified the arrested persons as Tajamul Rasool Wani, Hazim Manzoor, Amir Hussain, Mehdi Hasan, Mir Rafi, Umar Shafi and Saqib Mushtaq.

“For being Kashmiri, police thrashed and abused them. They were paraded in the market and humiliated in front of general public. The police officers from the area especially the SHO and Dy SP Nagrota are communal elements who should be taken to task for harassing innocent Kashmiri’s,” legislator Pahalgam Altaf Ahmed Kaloo told CNS adding that he not only raised the issue in Legislative Assembly but also talked to the top police officials of the Jammu.

“Saqib Mushtaq, one of the arrested youth was supposed to appear in B Tech IST Semester Civil Engineering Mathematics examination at Jalandar University but being in illegal custody he couldn’t appear in the examination,” said the victims adding that they fail to understand why they were harassed and detained.
