SRINAGAR: A militant was killed while another surrendered during an encounter with counter-insurgent forces in Shopian district on Friday, police said.
A police official said that forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Hanjipora area of Shopian district following information about the presence of militants in the area.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants opened fire on the forces personnel, drawing retaliation.

He added that in the ensuing gunfight, a militant was killed and the identity and group affiliation of the slain militant is being ascertained.
During the operation, another militant identified as Sahil Ramzan Dar, a resident of Shopian surrendered before the forces.
The operation was underway till the last reports came in.
