A shutdown is being observed in Sopore area of Baramulla district against the killing of a local militant in Amshipora-Ramnagri village of Shopian on Friday early morning.

Reports said that soon after the news of the killing of rumoured militant identified as Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Model Town Sopore spread, all the shops, educational institutes and other business establishments remained shut in the town. However, authorities are yet to identify the slain militant.

Following the episode, internet services were also suspended in the area for precautionary measures.

The encounter began after a joint of army’s 23 Para and SOG launched a cordon and search operation in an orchard at Amshipora-Ramnagri area of Shopian

An official said that the cordon and search operation was launched following credible input about the presence of some militants in the area.

He said that soon after the joint team of forces arrived in the area, the militant opened indiscriminate fire which was retaliated leading to a brief shootout. The gunfight ended with the killing of a militant.
