SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday issued the following statement regarding Shopian gunfight saying that on a specific input generated by Shopian Police, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Shopian police, 44 RR and 14 Bn CRPF in Pinjoora area of district Shopian.

A police spokesman in a statement that during the search operation, the hiding militants fired on the joint search party. The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter.

“In the ensuing encounter, 04 militants were killed and their bodies have been retrieved from the site of encounter. The identification and affiliation of the killed militants is being ascertained,” said the spokesman.

“However as per credible sources, the slain militants belonged to proscribed militant outfit HM. All dead bodies of slain militants have been sent to Baramulla for their last rites. Families of militants if any, are requested to identify them at Baramulla and if identified, the families can associate in burial and last rites as per religious practices,” he said.

“Just 24 hrs before, 05 terrorists were killed in the Rebon Shopian area of the same district. Dead bodies of all the said five militants have been identified by their families at the burial site and they participated in their last rites yesterday night,” he added.

He said that incriminating material including arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter.

“All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other crimes,” said the spokesman.

“In this connection, a case under relevant sections of law stands registered in Police Station Shopian and investigation has been initiated,” he said.

“People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” said police spokesman in a statement.
