One more militant was killed in a gunfight with the counter-insurgent forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday, taking the death toll of militants to three, police said.

In a statement on Twitter, a police spokesperson said one more militant was killed in the gunfight in Melhoora area of the district. “The search operation is still going on,” he said.

An official said that two army personnel including Major and two civilians were injured during the gunfight.

He said that the injured civilians were identified as Shahnaza Begum wife of Farooq Ahmad Koka resident of Melhora and Asif Ahmad Reshi son of Nissar Reshi of Wachi.

He added that all the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment.

The gunfight broke out after a joint team of Police and army’s 19 RR launched a cordon and search operation in Melhoora area of Zainapora on Tuesday late evening.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, triggering an encounter.

This is the seventh encounter in south Kashmir in the past ten days.
