Srinagar

The southern part of Kashmir’s Shopian district is observing a shutdown against the “disappearance” of a local youth, Zubair Ahmad Turray, who police claim fled from their custody on May 1.

All shops and other business establishments are closed in the town while traffic is off the roads.

Turray, a resident of Bonbazar area, was serving detention since 2015 when he was booked under the Public Safety Act for his alleged involvement in stone-pelting protests.

On May 1, police claimed that Turray fled from Keegam police post. “He had served his sentence and police were detaining him illegally,” locals said, adding that a conspiracy has been hatched against him.
