All the shops and business establishments are closed on Monday in remembrance of 23rd anniversary of Gaw Kadal massacre around Lalchowk area of the city. Heavy deployment was seen in Gawkadal and Maisuma areas.
The hartal call was given by Hurriyat Conference (G) and the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Political Party (PPP), Chairman, Engineer Hilal Ahmad War.The call was supported by other pro- freedom parties.
Hurriyat (G) and War had called for a shutdown in Civil Lines area of Srinagar City including Maisuma, Gaw Kadal, Lal Chowk, Red Cross Road, Court Road, Kukar Bazar, Sarai Bala, Maharaj Bazar, Abi Guzar, Ghoni Khan and other adjoining areas on 21 January, 2013 to mark the anniversary of ‘Gawkadal Martyrs’.
At least 50 people were killed in Gawkadal on January 21, 1990. The massacre happened one day after Jagmohan took his charge as Governor of the state.
