The movement of traffic on Islamabad-Kulgam road was affected on Thursday for the second consecutive day due to shutdown observed by the people in Qaimou area against the random nocturnal raids and subsequent arrests of youth on charges of stone-pelting.

Eyewitnesses told a local news agency, CNS, that complete shutdown was observed in Qaimou area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district for the second consecutive day. Locals informed that Kulgam police during a nocturnal raid arrested two youth from Qaimou area whom they identified as Altaf Hussain Sheikh son of Muhammad Akbar and Showkat Ahmed Dar son of Muhammad Yaqoub.

These arrests sparked protest and spontaneous shutdown in the area. All the shops and business establishments remained closed. Locals while demanding the immediate release of the duo said that shutdown would continue till youth are not freed.

A police official while confirming the arrest of duo told CNS that they are involved in different incidents of stone-pelting that occurred in the town in past.

Meanwhile, counter-insurgent group SOG arrested two youth in South Kashmir’s Tral town of District Pulwama. Police identified the duo as Tawseef Ahmed Shah son of Nisar Ahmed and Umar Sayeed son Muhammad Sayeed both residents of Pirnar Tral.
