SRINAGAR: Police in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Tuesday intercepted six trucks allegedly transporting illegally extracted sand in the Sonamarg area and initiated legal action in coordination with the Geology and Mining Department.
According to police, the vehicles were intercepted during routine checking and on the basis of specific inputs within the jurisdiction of Police Station Sonamarg. The trucks were found to be transporting sand without valid authorisation.
Police said the matter was immediately referred to the Geology and Mining Department, which verified the violations and initiated action under the relevant provisions of law.
Following the verification, all six trucks were fined by the department for the illegal transportation of sand, officials said.
Police added that monitoring and enforcement measures would continue to curb illegal mining and the unauthorised transportation of minerals in the district.
Reiterating its commitment to protecting natural resources, Ganderbal Police said strict action would continue against those involved in illegal mining, noting that such activities not only violate the law but also pose a serious threat to the environment and ecological balance.
