National Conference president and Union Minister for New and Renewable energy Dr Farooq Abdullah Thursday said that SKIMS is regaining its lost glory which was hit by militancy and ongoing conflict. He appreciated SKIMS faculty and administration for their tremendous efforts to maintain the sanctity of the prestigious institution of the state conceived by late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah as highest seat of treatment to serve the poor and needy.

Dr Farooq was speaking on SKIMS 31st annual day, celebrated to commemorate contributions of Late Sheikh Miohammad Abdullah on his 108th birth anniversary.

He assured director SKIMS on upgrdation of SKIMS infrastructure including SKIMS auditorium. He said he has already taken up the matter with Union Minister for health Ghulam Nabi Azad and prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh for expansion of SKIMS.

Director SKIMS & Ex-officio Secretary to government Dr S A Zargar highlighted the SKIMS achievements on the occasion which included setup of genetic center, bioinformatics, regional virology lab and so on. He also informed emergency medicine and critical will be upgraded from 12 to 40 beds.

Renowned gastroenterologist and Ex-director SKIMS Dr M S Khuru, who was  guest of honour delivered Sher-i-Kashmir Memmorial Oration where he discussed landmark events in discovery of Hepatitis E and its global impact.

On the occasion video film on SKIMS activities & life of Late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was displayed. Dr Farooq who was the chief guest on the occasion felicitated director SKIMS Dr S A Zargar and also released SKIMS annual day report 2013.

Dr G N Yattoo organizing secretary of the event presented welcome address and Dr Fazal Q. Parray presented vote of thanks.

Dean academic SKIMS Dr Khursheed Iqbal in deans address highlighted the academic achievements of the college under the stewardship of Dr Zargar and SKIMS management which included enhancement of MBBS seats from 50 to 100 and permission from MCI to start specialties in Orthopedics & Ophthalmology besides DNB in ENT & Psychiatry. “Phd courses in various specialties will also be started soon,” he added.
