For the first time, a live demonstration cum workshop on Endovenous Radio Frequency Ablation for varicosity was performed at SKIMS on Wednesday by the Department of Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery.

The spokesman said Director SKIMS& Ex-officio Secretary to government Dr Omar Javed Shah appreciated and congratulated the department for organizing the workshop.

He said that such innovative procedures and techniques will surely benefit the patients and take care of patients at SKIMS to new heights.

HOD, CVTS Dr G N Lone while giving details said that a 50 years old woman namely, Rather Taja, was admitted on February 5, 2018, in the department of CVTS, SKIMS, Srinagar under MRD No. 1028142 as a case of Varicose veins of the left leg and was planned for Radiofrequency Ablation. The workshop was conducted by a team of doctors including Prof G N Lone, Mr Paras Shrivastava and Mr Ishtiyaq Pandith (Technical Guides from Medtronic USA), Dr Tahleel (Radiology), supported by faculty, resident doctors and technical staff of CVTS, and Anaesthesiology.

He elaborated & said that his technique is quite new and innovative which helps numerous patients with varicosity of leg veins without open surgery and is purely a percutaneous procedure. This technique can be performed under local or spinal anaesthesia and can be done on OPD basis without putting much burden on hospital resources. Though the technique has been recent and applied throughout the world at SKIMS, it was not a routine procedure earlier. SKIMS has procured the latest version of RFA equipment (RFG-3) which is available only in few centres of the country. With this facility, hundreds of patients can be benefited and can avail the treatment at a very low cost. Till date, such patients used to go outside Jammu and Kashmir for treatment purpose which used to be quite costly.
