Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday paid tribute to slain constable Manzoor Ahmad Naik who was awarded Shaurya Chakra by the President Ram Nath Kovind.

In a statement issued here, police spokesperson said the award was received by the widow of the constable at the Defence Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Defence Nirmala Sitharaman were also present at the event, said the spokesperson.

Naik was killed in a gunfight with militants in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district last year.

“Constable Manzoor Ahmad without caring for his personal safety and besides being seriously wounded continued to fight till his last breath,” said the spokesperson.

“Manzoor Ahmad started his career by joining forces in the year 2003. He was part of the Tral Police team since the year 2005. He had led several anti-terrorist operations and maintained an unblemished service record of thirteen (13) years. Constable Manzoor Ahmad was born in Salamabad Dachna in the year 1980. He completed his primary education from Govt. High School Salamabad and studied at Govt. Higher Secondary School Boniyar from where he passed his class 12th examination. He is survived by his father Fakir Mohammad Naik (75), wife Nasreena Akhter (37) and son Ariz Manzoor (2),” the spokesman said.
