Slain Shopian civilian reaches home, Clashes erupt

Clashes erupted between protesters and government forces in the Daichoo village of south Kashmir’s Shopian on Tuesday following the killing of a youth, who succumbed to his injuries at the SMHS hospital, this morning.

Sources said that Tauseef Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Hassan Bhat, a resident of Nagbal, Imaam Sahib, in Shopian district succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours today after battling for life for nearly three days at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the SMHS hospital Srinagar.

An eyewitness said that as soon as the news about the death of youth spread in the area, a group of youth took to the streets at various spots and start protests against the killing of a youth and pelted the forces with stones. The forces responded by firing tear gas.

Reports said that four youth have also sustained injuries during the clashes.

An official said that forces have been deployed on various locations across the district to maintain law and order.

On Sunday five civilians were killed after forces fired at protesters at a number of places in south Kashmir when the encounter was going in Badigam Shopian.

In the encounter, four militants including top Hizb commander Sadam Padder and KU assistant professor Dr. Mohamad Rafi Bhat were killed. The gunfight broke out in Badigam village early on Sunday, May 6, 2018, after the joint team of Army, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in the area.
