The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) today launched a remediation unit for the prevention of bad odour that emanates out of dumping of garbage and other material at landfill site Achan.

According to the SMC Media Officer, the entire set up has come through a well known Mumbai based agency Guru Dev International Mumbai, funded by J&K ERA.

Joint Commissioner SMC Fayaz Ahmed Balla inaugurated the remedial unit.

While speaking on the occasion Balla said that SMC is developing a culture of having environment friendly bacteria which would be sprayed on the leach ate and the garbage dumped over there so that the site remains free of stink.

“SMC has taken various measures to improve upon the physical conditions of landfill site Achan including the prevention of bad odour developing from dumping of garbage there,” said Balla.

“We are taking up multi measures on the directions of Honorable high court for the implementation of Municipal solid Waste (management and handling rules2000.)”, said Balla. SMC is also working on the project of waste energy that will help to generate electricity from the solid waste material generated in the city, he added.
